Why you should add a German Shepherd to your Family

Updated: Sep 30, 2023

West German Show-lines bring a balance of intelligence, strength, beauty, and superior quality in the form of lifelong family companions.

German Shepherds are a popular breed of dog known for their intelligence, trainability, and loyalty. We started with a working line rescue over 15 years ago, and fell in love with the breed's intelligence and lovability. They can be great companions and protectors for families, as well as being used in a variety of working roles such as police, military, search and rescue, therapy and service dogs.

Here are a few reasons why you may want to consider getting a German Shepherd for your family:

  1. Intelligence: German Shepherds are highly intelligent and can be easily trained to perform a variety of tasks. This makes them an ideal choice for families who want a dog that can learn, obey commands, and offer protection.

  2. Loyalty: German Shepherds are known for their loyalty and strong bond with their owners. They can be fiercely protective of their families, make great watchdogs, and can help deter intruders for the entire family. We love the connection our puppies build with their families and strive to make it a lifelong bond.

  3. Versatility: German Shepherds are a versatile breed that can excel in a variety of roles, from working as a service dog to being a loving companion. They can be trained to perform many different tasks and excel in different environments - from basic obedience to advanced Shutzhund protection training. Different lines of the German Shepherd have different active balances. For example, the working line German Shepherd, most commonly used in advanced protection work such as police training, requires more training than the West Show-line German Shepherd that don't have as rigorous a training drive.

  4. Exercise needs: German Shepherds are highly active and need a lot of exercise to stay healthy and happy. They thrive with daily walks, runs and training sessions. We routinely practice socialization, basic obedience, and bite work training for a well rounded temperament.

  5. Family-friendly: German Shepherds can be gentle and patient with children. and make good family pets if they are given proper guidance and training. They are protective of their families and are known to be patient with children. Many of our puppies are taken to homes with young children and they learn to grow together as family companions.

Overall a German Shepherd puppy can be a great addition to any household. They are smart, loyal, active, good with children, and generally healthy. If you are considering getting a puppy, a German Shepherd is definitely worth considering. However, German Shepherds also have high energy levels, they can be stubborn and require consistent training.
